The 2017 USS Midway tournament brought some of the top hammers from the golden state to compete at this exciting, unique event in downtown San Diego. Team Supa Dupa, which has eight grapplers from central power Selma High, features three Fargo All-Americans Richard Figueroa (109), Jace Luchau (155), and Victor Jaquez (223). As well as three state medalists from 2017 in Tony Mendoza (163), Oscar Diaz (173), and Christian Rodriguez (185).
Team Supreme, which is an All-Star team from the always rugged Southern Section, features three state medalists Aaron Nagao (123), Josh Kim (163), Elijah Clark (285), and state champions Jonathan Prata (113), and Cleveland Belton (129).
Finals are scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM on top the USS Midway. Brackets and live scoring can be view at Trackwrestling.
Selma and St. John Bosco lead the way with the most wrestlers: The Bears will have eight representatives, including Richard Figueroa (109), Tristan Lujan (117), Josh Sosa (129), Rob Areyano (141), Jace Luchau (155), Tony Mendoza (163), Oscar Diaz (173), and Chris Rodriguez (185). Meanwhile, St. John Bosco will be represented by Tim Levine (109), Cleveland Belton (129), Nate Haas (173), and David Aranda (123).
Feature match No. 1: Santiago/Corona Josh Kim takes on Selma’s Tony Mendoza at 163 pounds. Kim is a two-time CIF state medalist and recently garnered All-American status at Fargo Nationals. Mendoza will be a senior for the Bears this upcoming season and was third at the state tournament. Kim will be the favorite, but Mendoza is a rugged and fiery competitor. Look for a lower scoring match where a critical early takedown could be the difference.
Feature match No. 2: St. John Bosco’s Tim Levine is only a sophomore with a long wrestling resume. Last year, he was a match shy from gathering All-State honors and recently gathered his third straight Fargo All-American status. Richard Figueroa is one of the top incoming freshmen in the country according to various wrestling websites. His slick and unique style of wrestling should have the fans in attendance in awe. Fans should expect a lot of points to be racked up in this match.
Intriguing matches: Besides Kim/Mendoza and Levine/Figueroa matches, other intriguing battles will take place. For instance, at 223 pounds, Prior to competing at St. John Bosco, David Aranda was a former Bellarmine Prep grappler where he advanced to the state tournament in 2015. Victor Jaquez Jr. was a state qualifier for the first time for the Bell’s and placed fifth in 2017. This match could get ugly as both athletes will attempt and surpass each other. At 285, Elijah Clark and Jackson Serna, wrestled once last season. Serna won their lone match by a point. Both won their respective CIF tournaments and advanced to masters. At masters, Serna was triumphant on winning his second title while Clark was sixth. Expect a low scoring match that could probably end in extra periods.
