2018 Fargo Women’s Cadet Freestyle Preview

LOS ANGELES, CA. – Yes, the boys from California get most of the press when it comes to wrestling at Fargo. However, many of the top wrestling sites tend to forget how strong women’s wrestling is in the golden state. The Fargo Cadet Women’s team has won five of the six tournament titles (2012, 2014-2017) and are on the hunt to claim their fifth consecutive championship this weekend.
They will send a strong team of grapplers to Fargo, North Dakota, with high hopes of returning to California with multiple stop signs. The Women’s Cadet tournament is slated to begin on Saturday, July 14th, and conclude on Sunday, January 15th from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM Central Time.

Top California Cadets to watch
Gianna Anaya (144lbs)

Anaya had a strong 2017-18 season that saw her become the second female wrestler for the Tigers to place at the CIF state tournament. Prior to making a name for herself in the golden state, Anaya was making waves in the national scene as she was fourth at Fargo at 144-pounds. A year of making her rounds at all CA USA Wrestling events, Anaya should be more than ready to claim a stop sign of her own.

Cheyenne Bowman (127lbs)

Bowman made history during the 2017-18 season by becoming the first grappler from Rowland High to win a CIF state title. She’s on her way, if injury free, to become the eighth four-time CIF state champion in 2021. She has been a dominant force on the national stage as she has claimed all types of tournaments with ease. Due to her track record, we could see Bowman obtaining a high seed and work her way to the finals to eventually become a champion.

Katja Osteen (164lbs)

If the surname Osteen is new to you, where have you been all this time! Osteen has been dominating boys and girls since her youth days. She was triumph during the month of March as she claimed both the Cadet and Junior Divisions at USA Wrestling’s Girls Folkstyle Nationals with style. Earlier this year, Osteen was crowned a CIF California state high school champion as a freshman. Additionally, so far in her young career, she is a several-time California USA Wrestling state champion and a multiple-time USA Wrestling national champion. Osteen should enter the event as the top seed and become a champion this weekend.

Adelina Parra (180lbs)

The first ever women state champion for San Fernando since CIF sanctioned the sport of women’s wrestling, will be joining her teammate (Gianna) with high hopes of becoming a Fargo Cadet Champion. Parra was triumphant in claiming a 2018 USAW/USMC Folkstyle National Championship and will keep the momentum going as she enters Fargo. She’s a dangerous individual when it comes to Folkstyle and even a stronger grappler in Freestyle. We could see Parra advancing far in the tournament and achieving All-American honors.

Emmily Patneaud (114lbs)

Just like Bowman, Osteen, and Parra, Emmily Patneaud was also triumphant in claiming a CIF state championship as an underclassman. Last year at Fargo, Patneaud placed fourth competing in Freestyle for the first time in her career. This weekend, Patneaud should get seeded pretty high with an opportunity to once again gathered All-American honors.

Genesis Quirarte (106lbs)

Up two weight classes from last year where she claimed All-American honors, Quirarte, is back at Fargo attempting to achieve the honors from last year. Quirarte has a great resume that includes placing at the CIF state tournament and the USAW/USMC Folkstyle Nationals. Quirarte looked good at CA USAW Freestyle state and should keep the momentum going at Fargo.

Hailey Ward (100lbs)

A CIF state medalist during the 2017-18 season, Ward should be one of the front-runners to gain a stop sign this weekend due to her track record. She is a former Fargo All-American and should obtain a high seed in the event. With her outstanding mat awareness and slick moves, Ward should hep team California win another team title.
