Antioch High School – 1988 CIF State Champions reunite after 30 Years.

1988 CIF State Champions – Antioch reunites after 30 years (BVAL Championships at Freedom HS)

One time Rivals, now longtime friends! TCW Editor, Aaron Fontes hanging out with his old friend Pat Sweeney!

A very special gathering happened last night inside the Freedom High School Gymnasium in Oakley, California. Before the finals of the Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) Wrestling Championships, the league honored the 1988 Antioch High School State Championship Wrestling team. Thirty years ago this march, Antioch became only the second school in NCS history to win the CIF State Wrestling Championships (joining the 1977 Clayton Valley team). No NCS team has won this tournament since!

This team won just about everything in 1988. They were undefeated in every dual meet and they took first place at the Overfelt Tournament, the Clovis Tournament, Sierra Nevada Tournament, San Marin Green and Gold Classic, The DVAL League Tournament, North Coast Section Tournament, and of course the CIF State Championships. Members of this historic team included Coaches Steve Sanchez and Frank Orlando, Billy Pillon, Eric Lynch, David Garibay, Bill Costa, Anthnony Camacho, Ron Bidgood, Ben Anteczak, John Soto, Casey Rhyan, Sean Ponce, Pat Sweeney, Jason Verduzco, Steve Thurgood, Vince Walker, and Jay Hernandez (not all pictured).
