The Spartans aren’t an ordinary program under seven-time Contra Costa Times Coach of the Year Mark Halvorson. Since taking over the CYC Wrestling Program in 1998, CYC has produced 210 State Champions, 48 Regional Champions, 40 California Triple Crown winners, 141 USA All-Americans, 32 National Champions, 17 international tournament medalists, one Junior Pan American Champion, three Junior World Team members, one Youth Olympian, Cadet World Team and two Senior National Team members. In addition to Torres, Harmon, and Harlan, Oakdale returns CIF state qualifiers Dustin Chavez, Jake Ryan, and Gabe Martinez. With these wrestlers looking to build on last year’s success and the addition of a strong class of freshmen wrestlers, the Mustangs are primed for a successful season. These freshmen have been coming into open mats regularly and are getting accustomed to the intensity and pace of high school wrestling. They are learning new technique, developing relationships with their teammates and the coaching staff, and quickly becoming a part of the program.
