Iowa – After session II of Division II Nationals, the Cal Baptist wrestling team sits in third place with (41 points) points behind St. Cloud State (46 ½ points) and tournament leader Notre Dame, Ohio, with 48 ½ points. Daxton Gordon (149) has looked unstoppable as he is 2-0 in the tournament with a (9-1) major decision in the first round and a (4:20) in the quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinal where he scheduled to face Damian Penichet (Upper Iowa) who was an All-American in 2016.

Joining Gordon in the semifinal round are Christian Smith (165), Nolan Kistler (174), and Nicholas Fiegener (184). Smith will start his quest for a national championship as he will take on Rodney Shephard (UNC Pembroke) a 2018 NCAA DII Super Region Midwest Champion.

Nolan Kistler’s opponent in the semifinals is fellow Super Region Four place winner Bruno Nicoletti (Colorado Mesa). Nicoletti was fourth in the region tournament, while Kistler was the champion. Neither met each other during the regular season. All-American Fiegener will take on 2018 NCAA West Super Regional third place winner Noel Torres (Newman). Fiegener has had two close matches in the tournament and even had to rally to win in the quarterfinals against Jordan Murphy (Ashland).

The Lancers took a big hit when NAIA National Champion Andrew Schulte (141) was eliminated in the consolation rounds by Joseph Calderone (LIU Post) in a close 9-8 match.

Still in the tournament and looking to garnered All-Americans from the golden state include Dustin Kirk (133) of King and Natrelle Demison (149) of Adams State. In both of Kirk’s matches this evening, he had to defeat fellow California wrestlers. In the first round of consolation, he defeated Noah Au-Yeung (Colorado School of Mines) 10-4, and Nathan Cervantes (San Francisco State) 5-0. Both athletes still alive and could end up the third place if they win three additional matches tomorrow.
