Cali Gold A wins Grand River Rumble 12U Duals

LANSING, MI. – On Friday evening, Team SCWAY from California won the Grand River Rumble High School Duals, now a second team from the golden state has won the event – this time it was Cali Gold A.

Cali Gold A where placed on Pool A and finished 6-0 in round-robin competition. Cali Gold A defeated Southern Illinois Gunslingers (86-0), Cyclones Blue (70-0), All American WC (78-3), Rochester WC (81-0), The Compound Grey (86-0), and Badgerway (69-6).

Due to their outstanding grappling in Pool competition, Cali Gold A was placed on the 1st-8th place bracket and had the opportunity to become champions.

In the quarterfinal round, Cali Gold A defeated Team 4M (58-9) to advance to the semifinal round and take on Team USA. Most matches against Team USA were wrestled all six minutes except for 74 and 82-pounds, where Isaiah Cortez and Brock Mantanona, earned significant decisions for Cali Gold A to win 35-12.

In the finals, Cali Gold A took on Team Compound Green out of Pennsylvania. The dual-meet was close throughout the 15 contested matches. Nevertheless, falls by Brock Mantanona (82), Jason Mara (86), and Erick McCown (112) made the difference as Team Cali Gold A won, 33-25.

Team Cali Gold B also competed in the tournament and finished third in pool competition by defeating Team Ragnar (51-21), Cyclones Black (60-18), Invicta Wrestling Academy (58-21), and King Select Platinum (40-26) to complete the event with a 4-2 record.

The squad featured many undefeated wrestlers during the event, such as Moses Mendoza (9-0 at 66), Isaiah Cortez (9-0 at 70), Isaiah Quintero (9-0 at 74), Brock Mantanona (9-0 at 82), and Jason Mara (9-0 at 86). Meanwhile, Sammy Sanchez (58), Abraham Cline (62), Elijah Cortez (78), Andrew Barbosa (91), and Diego Costa (200) finished with an 8-1 record.

For Cali Gold B, Dominik Bozanik (62), Thunder Lewis (66), Wyatt Lewis (70), Billy Townsend (74), Leonard Ashley (82), Daniel Zepeda (86), Damian Montoya (91), Angelo Posada (96), and Wanderlei Whittington (112) went 5-1 on the day.
