RIALTO, CA. – The Carter wrestling team continued its winning ways by winning the annual Carter Classic. A year ago, the Lions were triumphant in claiming the CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division meet with 211.5 points and eight masters meet qualifiers.
This weekend at their gym, Carter won the tournament with 239.5 points and three champions in Giovanni Guzman (106), Julian Leon (113), and Ethan Erickson (285). Bryan Avila (120), Brian Palafox (132), and Rigo Cano (220) placed third respectively in their weight classes.
Orange County power Laguna Hills was second in the team standings with 205 points, nine place winners, and a champion in Steven Kroesen (138) who earned the championship title by pinning Rafael Melara (Pacific/San Bernardino) in the finals.
Southern Section power Northview High was third with 190 points, seven place winners, and two champions in Jason Valencia (132) and Gabriel Cortez at 145-points.
Cortez was chosen as the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the middleweights after pinning Aisaac Perales of Canyon Springs in less than thirty seconds of their championship match. He earned four falls and a (3-2) decision during the tournament to receive such honors. It was Cortez second Carter Classic championship as he was the champion of this event last year at 138-pounds.
The other school tying Carter with three individual champions was San Diego section power La Costa Canyon High. The Mavericks individual champions were Aidan Baker (160), Ben Houri (170), and Joe Curtis (182). Curtis received the upper weights Most Outstanding Wrestler award as he recorded four falls and a (10-0) major decision in the tournament.
