SAN JOSE – With only one champion in Jasmine Guerrero (235) at the 10th Annual Lady Royals tournament in San Jose, Sac-Joaquin section power Del Oro High was triumphant in claiming the team title with 141 points.
I close second was Menlo-Atherton (136.5), followed by Fremont (123), Gilroy (121), and Alisal (117) to round up the five top teams in the 35-team field.
Guerrero, a sophomore for the Lady Golden Eagles, won the 235-weight bracket as she pinned Sosefina Nawaikula (Lincoln) in 2:38 of their championship round. After earning a first-round bye, Guerrero earned two other falls to finish the tournament with three falls in the competition.
Leila Sidhu (106) and Maicie Lockyer (143) also advanced to the finals of the competition but unfortunately, finished as runner-ups in their respective weight classes.
Sidhu was the No. 2 seed and obtained excellent results as she pinned her quarterfinal opponent in 25 seconds and her semifinalist foe in 1:06 to advance to the finals of the event. In the finals, she faced two-time state qualifier, Nicole Lee (Fremont), a very rugged opponent that she failed to in 4:18 of their championship match.
Lockyer, a senior and leader of the squad, advanced to the finals of the 143-weight class despite being the No. 3 seed in the event. After pining her first two opponents of the day, Lockyer earned a tough 5-0 win over 2018 state qualifier Eleni Fakaosi of Lincoln. Her finals opponent was 2018 state fifth-place winner Lauren Mcdonnell of Menlo-Atherton. With the match tied 4-4 going into the third period, McDonnell was triumphant in obtaining the escape point and avoid a late rally from Lockyer to earn the 5-4 win.
Other Lady Golden Eagles that placed in the tournament included Annastasya Culmer (121) third place, and Mariah Cortez (126) and Mary Lubiens (170) in fourth placed.
