Four things that occurred at the Bakersfield College Duals

The Bakersfield College Duals were a success once again, as Bakersfield College Coach Brett Clark put a first-class event for all coaches and wrestling fans to enjoy.  There were upsets, thrills, and lots of cheering for their favorite wrestlers at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

Moorpark College picks up their first win of the season

The Moorpark College wrestling team made their debut at the Bakersfield College Duals as their program was reinstated for the 2017 season. Head Coach Lindley Kistler, whose team is young and inexperienced, knew they were going to have a tough time acquiring wins against more experienced teams.

“Our team is young with many of our wrestlers only just learning the basics of wrestling” Coach Kistler said, “We hope to learn from our mistakes and improve for further competition.”

Moorpark (1-3) felt to host Bakersfield College (44-6), West Hills College (33-11), defeated Santa Ana College (30-22) in the third round, and lost in the final dual against Cerritos College (29-23). Josh Koning (Moorpark College/Royal HS) picked up the first win of the 2017 season for the Raiders as he pinned Brayden Riley (Bakersfield College/Centennial-Bakersfield HS) in 1:54. Koning completed the dual tournament 3-1 as he earned two falls and one technical fall on the day. Robert Flores (Moorpark College/St. John Bosco HS) also had a great day for the Raiders as he also completed the day with a 3-1 record. Up next for the Raiders will be a dual-meet at Cuesta College, Sept. 22, 2017, at 7:00 pm.

Cerritos College goes 3-0 on the day

One of the top teams in the state Cerritos College, nab three victories at the Bakersfield College Duals. The Falcons (3-0) began the dual-meet competition by defeating host school Bakersfield College (33-20), West Hills-Lemoore College (28-15), and newly reinstated program Moorpark College (29-22). The Falcons, are one of two teams favorited to win the CCCAA championship this season, Fresno City College is the other program. The Falcons had Josh Brown (Esperanza HS) 133, Devin Daughtery (Cypress HS) 141, Alex Hernandez (West Hills HS) 149, Wyatt Gerl (Calvary Chapel/Downey HS) 157, and Kennith Kirk (Elsinore HS) 165, finish 3-0 on the day.

Bakersfield and West Hills College finish 2-1 on the day

New West Hills College Coach Marcio Botelho was pleased with the performance of his newly acquired team as the Golden Eagles wound up with a 2-1 record on Saturday. The Golden Eagles defeated Santa Ana College (46-4), and Moorpark College (39-11). Their lone loss of the day was to Cerritos College (33-11). The next event for the Golden Eagles is the Mt. Sac Duals on Sept. 16. Host school Bakersfield College (2-1), defeated Moorpark College (44-6), lost their next dual-meet versus Cerritos College (33-20), and then went on beat Santa Ana (40-6) on the last dual of the day.

Josh Brown makes his college debut 

Freshman Josh Brown (Cerritos College/Esperanza HS) started the college season with a bang as he got the huge upset over CCCAA All-American Peter Corona (Bakersfield College/Independence-Bakersfield High). Down 6-5 on the third period, Brown got the takedown near the edge of the mat with seconds left to get the 7-6 win over Corona. Brown got a tech fall and a fall on his other matches.
