FRESNO, CA. – Under the guidance of head coach Paul Keysaw and staff, the Rams of Fresno City (12-0) were able to outwrestle Cerritos College (10-1) 33-6 at the state dual championships hosted by Fresno City College.
Winning eight of the ten contested matches, Fresno City took control of the meet early when No. 3 Mario Moreno defeated Josh Mendoza, backup to No.2 Roland Dominguez, 4-1 at 125-pounds.
After an injury default win at 133 for the Rams, No. 1 Josh Brown (141), put Cerritos College on the board for the first time as he beat No. 7 Luis Ramos, 6-4.
Fresno City continued with their aggressive style of wrestling as No. 3 Daniel Ruiz earned the major decision over No. 8 Devin Daughtery. Ruiz came out aggressive, scoring takedowns with ease. Daughtery was unable to score any attacks on Ruiz, partly to Ruiz great defense.
The score was now 13-3 entering Fresno City murders row. No. 1 Ruben Garcia extended his undefeated streak as he pinned Nick Dozier to make the score 19-3 with five matches remaining.
No. 2 Auggie Garcia earned the second major decision of the night as he defeated Jesse Pacheco 14-3 to increase the lead to 23-3.
The Falcons weren’t out of the competition yet as winning the last four matches via a fall would grant them the team title.
Nevertheless, No. 1 Abner Romero seal the deal for the Rams as he defeated No. 3 Zach Gonzales, 8-3, in the only top-five match of the dual.
Fresno City won the next two bouts as Jerrin Dean earned a fall at 184 and Miguel Ruiz the major decision at 197.
Cerritos College second win of the dual-meet came at 285 as No. 5 Randy Gonzales beat No. 6 Angel Mariscal 3-1.
Fresno City regular season has concluded but will take the mats on December 1st to begin North Regional tournament.
