Getting To Know incoming freshman Max Wilner

The California Wrestler had the opportunity to speak to one of the top incoming freshmen from the Golden State in Max Wilner. Wilner comes from a wrestling family as his older brother (Morris) advanced twice to the CIF state tournament and placed sixth as a senior for Santa Ana/Calvary Chapel. Max will be a freshman this upcoming fall at Fountain Valley and will attempt to shatter all records set by former Baron wrestlers.

TCW – How were you introduced to the sport of wrestling?

My dad (Richard) always wanted my brother and me to wrestle.  So, as soon we had the opportunity to do so, my brother and I began wrestling with Mark Munoz, shortly after he opened Reign.  Coach Munoz was my first wrestling coach, and I had the opportunity to start learning from him, Coach Paul Le Blanc.

TCW – When did it first cross your mind that you might want to go to Fountain Valley?

When the wrestling club Genesis, coach by Bobby Williams, was born it occurred to me that I might go to Fountain Valley.

TCW – Your older sibling (Morris) attended Calvary Chapel, why not compete for the Churchboyz?

My older brother attended Calvary Chapel and wrestled there for four years; he was blessed with the opportunity to call himself a (real) Churchboy.  As a youth wrestler, I wanted nothing more in the sport of wrestling than to wear that singlet; to be part of that storied tradition and rich legacy which so many great wrestlers were able to be a part of.  But, God had a different path for me, and I look forward to being part of the Barons and carrying on that legacy…to become, with my teammates, the first state champion(s) from Fountain Valley High School.

TCW – What would you have to do for this summer to be successful?

I’ve been working out all summer, lifting, eating and wrestling.  I’ve been working hard with my coaches to be the best I possibly can be.

TCW – Are you ready to begin competing in high school?

Yes.  I am very much ready to start competing in High School and am looking forward to it, especially to competing with my team in duals.

TCW – What weight will you be competing for the Borons?

Not sure yet.  As the season gets closer, I will sit with my coaches to determine where they see me fitting in the lineup.

TCW – You’re down by one with 20 seconds, which move would you use to get the takedown?

High crotch or throw by or whatever is there to obtain the takedown.

TCW – Favorite movie?

Planet of the apes.

TCW – Favorite food to eat?

That’s a simple question. I enjoy eating Sushi.

TCW – Who would you like to thank for your success in life and on the mats?

I thank God first, my family, and all of my coaches that have ever helped me, but especially Coaches Paul Herrera, Dakota Trom, Danny WoiworRyan Lang, and mo Mora. I would also like to thank my past and present teammates and all my training partners.
