AKRON, Ohio. – Double Fargo All-American and one of the top wrestlers in California, Jace Luchau (Sons of Thunders/Selma HS), was triumphant today in Ohio as he advanced to the finals of UWW Cadet Greco-Roman Team Trials at 71 kg.
Luchau advanced to the finals of the challenge tournament by routing his first two opponents (4-0 and 9-5) to process to the quarterfinal round where he defeated 2018 Pan American silver medalist Aaron Gandara, 9-7. He then followed with a (10-2) defeat of Donnell Washington to take on James Burks of Nebraska, for the opportunity to represent the U.S. on the world stage.
In the finals, Luchau lost the first match (9-0), but stormed back in the second by winning (8-2) and forcing the third match. In the third match, Burke was successful in winning (8-0) to become a world team member.
Another medalist for the golden state was Ryan Franco (Darkhorse/Clovis North HS). The young star advance to the semifinal round by defeating his first three opponents, before being knocked out from the championship bracket by the eventual runner-up Miles Knuckles of Ohio, 8-0.
Franco won two additional matches in the consolation to place third at 60 kg. The last medalists from California were Laz Maldonado (Ronin/Clovis West HS) who competed at 45 kg.
Maldonado advanced to the quarterfinal round where he was defeated by the eventual champion Cale Anderson of Wisconsin (8-0). Maldonado won a couple of matches in the consolation bracket and after the long haul placed fifth.
