Panthers finish 4th at West Hills / 3rd at Santa Ana

The Sac City Wrestling team traveled to Lemoore and the West Hills Tournament. Still nursing many minor injuries, the Panthers finished in 4th place among the 18 colleges represented at this early season mash-up. Fresno City won easily while Cerritos and Mt. San Antonio finished 2nd and 3rd.

SCC was led by two finalists, Abel Garcia (Soph-Oakdale HS) at 174 and Isaac Bertalotto (Soph-Turlock HS) at 184. Garcia suffered his first loss of the season in the finals to Abner Romero of FCC. Garcia had one fall and one Tech Fall on the way to the finals. Bertalotto, wrestling for the first time this season, made it to the finals but defaulted out for the 2nd place finish.

A trio of Panthers finished in 3rd place. Conrad Trevino (Fresh-Del Campo HS) lost a tough match in the semi’s to eventual Champion, Conrad Lopez of FCC, but battled back to win two more and take 3rd place. Manny Curry (Fresh-Pleasant Grove HS) lost a tough quarterfinal match and fought back with three straight wins to get to the 3rd place match. College rules only allow for six matches in one day, and Curry met that number with his last win and had to settle for a tie for 3rd. He had two falls a Tech Fall and a Major in his victories. Steven Abbott moved down to 184 this week and took 3rd place as well. After losing in the semi, he bounced back with two wins to take 3rd. He had three falls in his victories including the 3rd place match. Also medaling was Mikey Mello with a 6th place finish. Mello won his first two matches by fall, including a fall of the #1 seed, Adam Valdez of MTSA. SCC will go forward next week for the Santa Ana Tourney at Santa Ana College.


The Panthers traveled to Santa Ana where they had their highest finish of the year with a 3rd place finish.

Champion Steven Abbott paced SCC at 184 (Soph-Orland HS). Abbott had 2 falls and a tech-fall on his way to the championship, including a fall in the finals.

Abel Garcia (Soph-Oakdale HS) finished 2nd at 174. Two of his three wins were by fall.

Also getting medals were Brian Horn (Soph-Rocklin) at 197 and Eddie Zamora (Fresh-Rocklin) at 285 took 4th Place. It was the first tournament of the year for Horn and a good start for him. He had one fall on the day. Zamora lost his first match of the day, then won 4 in a row, including a fall and coming back to defeat Solano of Palomar whom he lost to in his first match. Great rebound for Eddie.

Jordan Denny-174 (Soph-Folsom HS) went 3-2 on the day including two falls to finish tied for 5th.

Others getting wins for the Panthers were: Ryun Ortiz (Soph-133-Virginia) had one win by fall; Mikey Mello (Fresh-149-Oak Ridge HS) had two wins by fall; Manny Curry (Fresh-157-Pleasant Grove) Had 3 wins including a fall and a tech-fall; and Hayden Elias (Fresh-285-Yuba City HS) who had a fall in a win.
