An opportunity to compete at the inaugural UWW Under 23 World Championships and represent the U.S. in Bydgoszcz, Poland, next month was on the line today. Three California athletes advanced to the finals in the respective weights with an opportunity to be called team members – Dominique Parrish (Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club) at 55kg, Forrest Molinari (Titan Mercury Wrestling Club) at 69kg, and Jon Jay Chavez (NYAC/FFWC) at 75kg.
Parrish, who placed third at the U.S. Open in April, advanced to the finals of her bracket by earning two consecutive 10-0 tech fall wins. In the finals, Parrish met with two-time Cadet world finalist Ronna Heaton (Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club), in what was to be a tied match between two great wrestlers. However, Parrish proved to be too much for Heaton as she defeated her 8-0 and 10-0 in two consecutive matches to become a UWW Under 23 World Team Member.
Molinari had a similar road as Parrish as she demolished the 69kg bracket by earning three consecutive tech fall win (10-0, 10-0, and 11-0) to meet up with 2017 WCWA finalist Niauni Hill (NYAC). The first match, Molinari won with ease as she got the 11-0 tech fall to get her closer to becoming a World team member. The second match with Hill was much closer as she held onto a 2-1 win to join Parrish in Poland.
Chavez had little trouble advancing to the finals of the 75kg weight class as he earned two consecutive tech fall victories to meet up with a familiar foe in Jesse Porter (NYAC/NMU). Chavez and Porter met in the consolation semifinals of the U.S. Open, where Chavez got the 7-3 win. This time it wasn’t meant to be as Porter got the best of Chavez and defeated him 7-2 and 7-3 to become a World team member.
Other wrestlers from California that placed at the event included Aleeah Gould (King University) 4th at 48kg and Alexandria Glaude (Titan Mercury Wrestling Club) 3rd at 69kg.
The freestyle portion of the tournament along with the remainder Greco weight classes are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
