Poway Wins Wrestling Showdown Against St. John Bosco

RIVERSIDE, CA. – In a battle of high school powerhouse wrestling programs, Poway High, rated as the No. 6 ranked team in California, defeated No. 3 St. John Bosco, in front of more than 3, 000 wrestling fans at Cal Baptist Events Center on Friday night.

It was a highly anticipated match as the Titans have a been a perennial power not just in the San Diego Section but in the country as well. While St. John Bosco, a young program when it comes to the national level, has become a powerhouse in the Southern Section as of late.

The dual meet began at 132-pounds where two-time state champion Cleveland Belton showed no mercy against his opponent as he obtained a 16-0 victory to put the Braves on the board.

The joy of the Bosco faithful was shortly lived as Zane Stoddard pinned 2018 state qualifier Justin Valdoria in the second period of their match to help the Titans take the led 6-5.

Two-straight victories by Cael Valencia (145) and Sonny Santiago (152) helped St. John Bosco to regain the lead 14-6 after four contested matches.

Arizona state champion Aaron Gandara (160) made his debut for the Mean Green Machine of Poway and did not disappoint as he got the 8-6 victory over California state qualifier Louis Rojas. A major decision by Alex Hernandez (171) helped the Titans cut the lead to 14-13.

The lead was extended to 20-13 for Bosco as Fargo runner-runner Nathan Haas (182) pinned his opponent in the first period. A forfeit at 195 made the score 20-19. Nevertheless, a pin by Jaiden Patterson (220) once again made the score 26-19 for the Braves.

Forfeits at (285) and (113) and a pin by Poway at 106-pounds locked the dual-meet for Poway as it made the score 37-26. Two matches were left to be contested. However, Bosco had a wrestler a 120 and was going to forfeit at 126.

After Antonio Lorenzo (120) won 3-2 over Carson Sauriol and the forfeit at 126-pounds, the final score was Poway 43 St. John Bosco 29. Next time this two teams meet will be at the always tough Walsh Jesuit Ironman tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, during the first week of December.
