TCW WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
This past weekend, Freedom’s Dalia Garibay added to her already impressive resume by winning her third consecutive North Coast Section title at Albany High School. Only a junior, Garibay entered this year’s NCS Championships with an impressive 18-0 record and easily made it to the finals with three straight pins. In the championship finals, she faced returning CIF State medalists Christina Wilson of Upper Lake High School. After three hard fought rounds, Garibay prevailed by a decision of 4-3.
Entering this year’s CIF State Championships among the favorites to challenge for an individual state title, Garibay has earned two state medals (5th, 2nd) thus far and is in position to win a prized third and possible fourth state medal. To date, thirty-eight wrestlers have earned three state medals and fourteen with four. Within the North Coast Section, six wrestlers have earned three state medals, but none have achieved a fourth. They include Rebecca Busch (Castro Valley), Rachael Butler (Foothill), Chanel Chawalait (Albany), Talissa Noriega (James Logan), Erica Sotelo (Albany), and Sinorti Stegman (Berkeley). The eighth annual CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships are February 23-24 at the Visalia Convention Center in Visalia.
In addition to earning three NCS titles and two state medals, Garibay has also earned All-American honors twice at the Cadet Nationals in Fargo. In January, USA Wrestling, Flowrestling and the National Hall of Fame ranked her no. 8 in the country. As a result of her accomplishments, our staff has chosen Dalia Garibay TCW Wrestler of the Week.
