This past weekend, the Lou Bronzan Invitational at Liberty High School in Brentwood (NCS) celebrated its 35th Annual tournament. Since the early beginning, only one wrestler had earned four championship titles in its history. In 2008, two-time State Champion David Klingsheim (4x CIF State medalist) of Liberty High School became the first to accomplish this rare feat, but not too many years later an up and coming standout freshman from Upper Lake High School in the North Coast Section took the tournament by storm and set his mark by impressively dominating the competition that year. Since 2015, Jose Fernandez has systematically dominated his competition and entered this year’s tournament determined to walk away with number four. Without breaking much of a sweat, Fernandez wasted no time on the mat and easily walked away with his fourth Battle for the Belt title and was named the Outstanding Middle Weight wrestler. Ranked No. 6 in the state of California, Fernandez is a three-time North Coast Section medalist, two-time state qualifier (top 12 in 2018), and is committed to compete for Cal Poly, SLO next season.
As a result of his great performance, determination to excel to the next level, and outstanding citizenship, the TCW has chosen Jose Fernandez this week’s Wrestler-of-the-Week. Congratulations!
