The 145-pound bracket at the “Rumble for the Rig” tournament at Bakersfield High School was loaded with talent this year. There were three wrestlers with CIF state medals in their outstanding resume, as well as three other grapplers who punched their ticket to the state tournament during the 2016-17 season.
Seeded No. 3, Izaak Olejik knew winning the event wasn’t going to be an easy task. Nevertheless, he doesn’t back down from his competition. After defeating his first two adversaries, Olejnik took on the rugged job of competing against two-time CIF state medalist and the fifth-ranked wrestler in California, Ricky Torres of Oakdale in the semifinal round. With his catlike skills, Olejnki came out victorious over Torres to advance to the finals.
In the finals, Olejnik wrestled against the second-ranked wrestler in the state in Tony Mendoza of Selma High. With Mendoza up by one point with seconds left on the match, Olejnik countered a bad shot by Mendoza and got the necessary takedown to defeat him and win the 145-pound bracket. Due to his outstanding tournament run, Olejnik was awarded the middleweights most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Congratulation to Izaak Olejnik for being this week TCWs wrestler of the week.
